This week we are learning about "Life in the City".
For one of our math centers we played a game called "Build a City".
Resources
- dot dice (any size will work)
- plastic blocks (small wooden ones would also work)
- 1 piece of paper for each child (I created a sheet with a simple 3x2 squares table - therefore the game lasts for 6 rounds)
How we played
The children took turns at rolling a dice. They 'read' the number and used plastic blocks to create a building. If they rolled a 6 then then a building was made to be six stories (blocks) tall, if a child rolled a two the building would be two blocks tall etc. The children had a lot of fun and were able to discuss and compare their building heights at the end of the game.
(A special thank you for Ms. Frannie for the game idea.)
Skills used in this activity include:
- subertizing (recognizing 'how many' in a set without counting)
- counting sets of objects up to 6
- comparing height/length
- counting with 1 to 1 correspondence
- vocabulary such as - buildings, stories, taller than, shorter than, more, less
- fine motor skills - joining and separating blocks
- taking turns
